Our School

A survey conducted in 2011 depicts the heartbreaking information that nearly one hundred students in the Panchayats of Vengola, Rayamangalam and Mudakkuzha are differently abled. This motivated our bishop Mor Aphrem Mathews to establish an institution for the empowerment of such students. As per his vision the foundation stone for a special school was laid in 2012 by the Catholicose H.B. Mor Baselios Thomas I in the compound of the bishop's house, Koinonia, at Allapra in the Vengola Panchayat. The constructions were done in an enormous pace and within one year the school started functioning. Its inauguration was on June 20th, 2013 by the Catholicose; and the classes were opened officially on July 1st with 8 students and 1 faculty member. Later, by the grace of God, the number of students and faculty got increased and at present there are 25 students and 8 faculty members.

Mor Athanasius Special School is an undertaking of the Perumbavoor Region of the Angamaly Diocese of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church. The vision of our school is "to empower the intellectually challenged children through education and training" and our mission is "to serve the differently abled ones". Differently abled personalities are very common in our society, where their frailty varies.

Some of them are intellectually disabled, autistic, blind, handicapped, cerebral palsy patients, multiply disabled, duff & dump and so on. Our school mainly focuses on the empowerment of intellectually disabled and autistic students.Education is a product of experience, which involves knowledge, skills, attitudes and members of the community. Education brings out the potential of every person and it fetches the overall development of an individual. The traditional school system could not meet the requirements of special students. So we need to impart special education instead of normal education. Special education programmes are designed for those students who are mentally, physically, socially and emotionally delayed. The aspect of "delay" is broadly comprehended as a developmental delay, i.e., a child's overall development – physical, emotional, cognitive, and scholastic skills – which places them behind their peers. Consequently, the students' needs cannot be met within the environment of a traditional classroom. Hence, our school provides special education programs and services by adapting content, teaching methodology, and designing special instructional methods as per the Act of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to meet their individual needs. Through the specialized education and systematic training we can develop their abilities and social mingling. Special education helps them to modify their behaviour, to learn new skills, and to experience their daily living activities. Our motto is to 'becoming independently' by giving training and teaching vocational projects, and thereby making them self-reliant. When the whole world sees their dis-abilities, we see their different-abilities.
